Orthoptists are university trained allied health experts, specialising in the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of vision, eye movement disorders and problems with how the eyes work together, called binocular vision. These issues can be caused by a problem of the eye muscles or in the nerves enabling the brain to communicate with the eyes to move correctly.
We see clients with a wide array of conditions affecting vision. They may be experiencing symptoms such as blurred, wobbly or double vision, or there might be misalignment or uncontrolled movement of the eyes.
We are trained to offer a range of treatments in the management or correction of these conditions. This may include eye patching for amblyopia (lazy eye), orthoptic eye exercises, prisms or glasses.
We offer low vision assessment, support and intervention where required.
We commonly work with clients with neurological conditions, such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, brain tumours, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson's disease to name a few. We co-manage with a wide range of medical and allied health specialties to ensure the best outcomes for our clients.
We help people to manage their visual symptoms better and provide advice for their visual and general rehabilitation.
A referral to access services from an orthoptist is not required.
